| CAPTAINS CORNER AND FISHING REPORTS AS OF 9:05 AM April 20, 2010 |
| Well I just got back from Ludington and here is a reel fact fishing report. Long time good friend Jeff aka "Freshwater Drum" booked a charter with my good friend Capt Doug from Polecat III Charters and President of Yeck Lure Co. and invited me along, well of course I would go, lol, good friends, hot fishing, I'm in!!! Doug said the fishing the previous day had been hot for browns and a couple of kings and lakers with over 30 fish boated on Sat so hopes were high. I told Doug jokingly "I want some big spring kings!!!!!!!" We headed out on Sunday morning. It was crisp morning with a steady NW wind at around 15-20 so we knew it was gonna be chilly. We cleared the pierheads around 6am and headed north. We ran up to the point and turned around on a downtroll. Jeff and I set lines and away we were fishing. The first 45 minutes or so were slow....not a single lick! Stain looked good in skinny 10 fow or less and water temps were around 47. As we trolled Doug notice the stained water moved out a hair so we began to troll out to 10-20 fow. BAMMMMMM!!!! 4 rods go off in a matter of 30 seconds and all reels are screaming. Assuming we got into maybe a couple of kings or big browns the fight was on! We boated 3 big kings and 1 laker. By the time the 4th fish was in the net, 2 more rods went off screaming! 2 more big kings came to the boat. Action stayed pretty steady for the rest of the morning. The last 1 1/2 hours were dead but we were trolling back to the harbor and out of the area we had been popping fish! All in all we went 22-28. 15 kings up to 15lbs, all adult fish with imature eggs, 5 lakers released and 2 brown trout up to 8lbs. Birds, 2 color core and divers were all taking fish with Rapalas and Mag Spoons. Hot setup was a diver 15 back with a Yeck Blue Dolphin that had 9 bites itself. Downtroll took all our fish except 3. Best bite was in 10-20 fow and in colder water temps 42 degrees instead of the 47 degree water we had up at the Point. By trips end the wind went a lil more NE and seemed to be blowing all the stained water off the beach....not a good sign for the days to come. For some reason the beach was loaded with lots of bait in the 4-5 inch range, thats why those big kings were there. Anyone who seems to think kings migrate from the southern end of Lake Michigan in the spring and that all Lake Michigan kings winter in the southern end might think again. Those fish may just be hanging in the deeper water on the bottom offshore off of Ludington until its time to head in and go on the feed bag, of course this maybe just a few peoples theory, but it maybe a correct one. Warmer than normal spring this year may have something to do with these kings being caught in Ludington at this time. I never remember spring fishing for browns and finding this many kings, and big ones too, out of Ludington in April. If your looking to get into some fish out of Ludington look no further than Capt Doug and Polecat III Charters. If you fish on your own, get some Yeck spoons, the finest spoon on the market...it catches fish and a lot of them!!! Links to both of Doug's websites can be found on my ABOUT US page!! I will be updating my fishing reports page through the rest of the spring and all through the summer on Lake Erie/Lake Michigan fishing.... I have my DNR inspection at the end of May so I will be preparing for that also... If your looking for a great Lake Erie/Lake Michigan fishing experience look no further than Polecat III Charters out of Ludington for some great Salmon and Trout action with my good friend Capt Doug or look to Lake Erie for fast Walleye action with Kathys Boyz 3 Charters with Capt Bruce who is my father.
